HAPPY HENS EGG COOPERATIVE

Families and individuals who become members own the chickens and the eggs!

A cooperative is sharing equal ownership of the chicken farm.

The Happy Hens cooperative provides strength in numbers where an entire community can own their own chickens and ensure their chickens are from true free range happy hens.  The hens eat a healthy full balanced natural menu from nature and produce eggs rich in vitamins, protein and nutrients.

Member families and individuals also have the opportunity (but not the requirement) to experience raising chicks, caring for the chickens, collecting eggs and participating in potlucks, community events,  spring photo shoots, Easter egg hunts and more!

MONTHLY EXPENSES FOR A EGG COOPERATIVE:

RESIDENT CHICKEN FARMER:   Farmer’s struggle to survive and our nonprofit is dedicated to preserving small farming and helping the next generation of young farmer.  Part of the cooperative proceeds will go to the full time employment of a beginning chicken farmer to help them get started in farming.   Our resident chicken farmer gets started at sunrise opening the pens to let the chickens out and work till sunset where the caretaker puts the chickens in the for the night.  The caretaker will care for the chickens,  fix fences,  help clean chicken coops and manure,  care for sick or injured chickens, provide daily feed and water. The chicken farmer also oversees or collects the eggs and distribution to families and leads the chicken educational and volunteer days for members and the school groups..

FREE RANGE FARM LAND COSTS:  Our Happy Hens are provided an abundance of acres to explore, grow and enjoy.  True grass fields and foraging so part of the budget is allocated to the cost of  land, taxes, insurance, etc.

FEED AND WATER:  Chickens need food and in exchange produce great eggs!  The diet for the chickens includes chicken feed and we support families bringing fresh organic veggie scraps to share (Do not Feed: TOXIC to chickens are Avocado, Citrus,  Chocolate,  Coffee, Tea, Green Potatoes, Onions,  Raw/Dried Beans,  Eggplant, Spinach, Rhubarb, Nuts,  Old or Moldy Food).

GAURDIAN ANIMALS:  Our Cooperative includes using Guardian Animals such as livestock dogs, Alpacas and Donkeys to protect the chickens from predators on the ground (Foxes, Coyotes, Raccoons) and in the air (Hawks).
